We have several of these mini birds around our house!!! As little as they are, they can get pretty aggressive with each other!! There is something so cool about hearing one approach, almost like a tiny little airplane. Did you know they flap their little wings approx. 10-80 times per second. The average is around 50 times per second, however, the Amethyst Woodstar and Bee Hummingbird are around 80 flaps per second, whew, that’s a lot of flapping for such a tiny creature!!! They can fly up/down, side to side and even backwards and fly up to 60mph!! They must eat on average of every 10 minutes to keep up with their very high metabolism, imagine that!!
They can live up to 6 years and are the smallest birds in the world. If you are lucky enough to have hummingbirds where you live, I hope you enjoy their VERY frequent visits to your feeder or flowers!!! What a great thing to experience!! Kids love to watch them feed!!! I’ll try to get a picture of one at our feeder!!!
Tiki, you’re so lucky! I have tried, and never get the hummingbirds to visit my neighborhood.
I would LOVE to see pics!
We love to watch our tiny friends flit, fight and rest on an old wicker arm chair in our yard. We’ve found the bright golds and bronze on a hummingbird are very territorial and will become extremely aggressive if another gets close to what he perceives as “his” food. I don’t know what kind of hummingbirds they are but they are vicious and all too delightful to watch. Nice post! Supergranny
